Lev is a young Russian boy how is livining in the middle of World War II. People are starving to death, looking for their families, everyone is cold and slowly dying. One day Lev and his friends find a dead body in the middle of the snow, they decide to search for what stuff he had in his pockets. Without any notice, the realize that some soldiers where behind. the leave everything and start too run for their lifes. They come across a fence and both of Lev's friends pass it, but Lev is caught and taken to a seld. With low hopes of surviving Lev meats Kolya a past soldier from the Red Army. Both infer the worst, they will end their lifes. Insted of that, they meet a High range coronel, wich only asks them a single task: Find a dozen eggs by friday for a party or they will die. The only problem is, there is no really good, in other words there is no real supplice they have to find them for the good of both of them.
"My grandfather, the knife fighter, killed two Germans before he was eighteen. I don`t remember anyone telling me- it was something I always seemed to know."(pg 1)
During the time of war the only thing people knew best to do is to kill, since that is war is all about. So far, as the quote says, no one tells the kids that their parents or relatives kill anyone, but they all ready knows because like I said before, that is what war is all about...

Even now, even in the middle of all of this" said the coronel, gesturing with is hands to indicate Leningrad, the famine, the war,"She wants a real wedding, a proper wedding. This is good, life must continue, we`re fighting barbarians but we must remain, Russian. So we will have music, dancing... a cake." (pg 34)
I`ve always heard the frase, people with money and powervcan do what ever they like to, and you know in some way its completely true. In this case the coronel was lots of power over the community. Poeple with poper dont always realize the different sicumstances other not wealthy people are going though. They will always get what they like to get, if that includes killing people.
When we talk about pople in World War II, we notice two or more different categories, one of them can be the rich and power full people will get what they need, even if its not necessary, but there is no other power that can or will stop them untill they get what they want.
